“Popular Wireless” Blog Shuts Down

Doug Smith, the editor of Popular Wireless, a blog and forum site covering the Family Radio Service (FRS), General Mobile Radio Service (GMRS), personal communication systems and other radio topics, says he has shut his blog down as of July 15.

The site has been in operation since 1995.

Citing failing health and decreasing advertising revenue, Smith says he will download a final back up of the forum before shutting down the bulletin board.

“I can no longer afford the time and expense to maintain PopularWireless.com,” Smith’s final blog post says. “The site will vanish into history effective July 15, 2011.”

The site is still on-line and filled with information. Popular Wireless will, no doubt, be missed by the forum participants and those who visited on a regular basis.

Smith’s final post is decidedly down-beat, but he does strike a positive, if nostalgic, note at the end.

“It was fun.”
